Sahuaro Ranch School
K-3 Literacy Lab

The K-3 Literacy Lab services Kindergarten through third grade students in a small group setting. A total of 192 students pass through the Literacy Lab each day. Students receive instruction in the five major areas recommended by the National Reading Panel: Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Vocabulary, Fluency, and Comprehension. In addition, students participate in such activities as Guided Reading and Writing, Running Record Assessments, DIBELS Progress Monitoring, and the Fountas & Pinnell Leveled Literacy Intervention Program. Students rotate through six to seven stations which are under the direction of their classroom teacher, a ParaProfessional, a PAL reading specialist, or myself, a Title 1 Reading Specialist.

This is my thirty-second year as an educator where I have taught grades K-8, have been a Literacy Coach, Instructional Specialist, and, my all time favorite, Reading Specialist. I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Education and a Master's Degree in Educational Technology from Arizona State University, in addition to Early Childhood, Structured English Immersion, Computer Science, and Reading Specialist endorsements. One of the greatest joys which I find in life is teaching a student to read. It is for that reason that I love spending many hours in the Sahuaro Ranch Literacy Lab with amazing colleagues and students.
